Mirror Mirror

I run into my room and slam the door shut. Throwing my school bag across the room, I slide down against the door. Hands clutching onto my hair.

“They’re so cruel.” I whisper to myself, trying my best not to let the tears fall from my eyes.

“Wow, where’d you get that shirt? It’s almost pretty enough to hide your ugly ass face!” Rissa spits out smugly.

“OMG, you actually decided to style your hair like that? I used to love that hair do but now I’m not so sure. Thanks for ruining it bitch.” Monie gasps in disgusts as if she were looking at a slimy slug.

“What? Your magic not strong enough to actually make you look good? What a shame. I can’t believe we actually go to school with an ugly bitch like you. Let’s go girls. We’ve already gotten uglier just by being in Meiyre’s presence.” Miya mocks. The three girls simply laugh and walk off leaving me ashamed and embarrassed in front of all the students standing in the hallway.

“What did I ever do to them?” The tears slowly fall down my face. I hug my knees into my chest and rock back and forth attempting to calm myself. My breath stutters and body shakes. Am I truly not good enough? Is my face really that horrid?

I cry by the door for what feels like hours. Questions flying through my head. Doubts filling my mind. Perhaps I really am as ugly as they say.

Gathering up what little energy I have, I walk to my full body mirror. Staring at my reflection, I am greeted with puffy red eyes, tear stained cheeks, and a runny nose. I look downright awful.

I stare at myself for a few more seconds before speedily grabbing my school bag and rummaging around in it. My hand grabs a hard covered book about the size of a diary. I quickly pull it out and drop it onto my desk. My spell book.

Flipping through the pages I search for a transformation spell. Anything that could make me fit in with everyone else. The words “beautify”, and “appearance” immediately catch my eyes, so I flip back to that page. I carefully read every word three times over in my head before looking at my reflection once again.

“From land to the sea, in the eyes of the gods above, I wish to be the most beautiful girl. Those before me will wish to be me. Illus.” I chant, eyes locked with those of my reflection.

Silent seconds pass by and nothing seems to be changing. Unexpectedly, my reflection begins to move on its own; no longer copying my actions. Too many questions fill my head at once to properly process what’s happening before me. I just stare at the mirror in shock. The me in the mirror clasps her hands behind her back and sends me a bright smile.

“So you wish to be beautiful Meiyre?” She questions me in a sweet tone. My lips refuse to move so all I do is nod my head. The other me’s smile widens before saying “But aren’t you already beautiful?”

“H-How?” I inquire, starting to shake off my shock. Curiosity taking over instead.

“Your face is very pretty. You have beautiful almond shaped eyes, a perfect nose, and soft, plump cheeks. How are you not beautiful?”

“I…I don’t quite see what you’re seeing. I’m not that beautiful.”

“Come closer and you’ll see your beauty.”

I slowly move closer to the mirror and the other me does the same. Stopping when my face is inches from the mirror, I examine all of my facial features trying to see what she sees. To my amazement, I begin to see the beauty the other me spoke of. My reflection looked as though it was slowly morphing, revealing how pretty I actually am. My hand moves to touch the mirror as if to confirm that what I’m seeing is real. The second my hand comes into contact with the mirror, I’m quickly sucked in and everything goes dark.

Meiyre’s room sits in empty silence. Nothing but her possessions scattered around the place. Suddenly, two hands emerge from the mirror and grip onto the wall. The whole body of Meiyre following soon after. But that isn’t Meiyre. At least, not quite.

‘Meiyre’ scans the room, observing her new living space. She slowly turns to look into the mirror and grins darkly.

“Mirror mirror on the wall, a wish has been made, and a life shall now fall.”

End Notes:

  • Meiyre’s name is pronounced as “Mary” (because weird spellings are awesome)
  • “Meiyre” is a miriru which is a being that only comes into existence when someone makes a wish or promise to themselves in a mirror. The miriru must then trick the person into touching the mirror in order to switch places with them (miriru are beings made up by me)
  • Meiyre’s spell didn’t work as her magic wasn’t strong enough
  • In the line “My reflection looked as though it was slowly morphing, revealing how pretty I actually am.”, Meiyre’s reflection is actually morphing. “Meiyre” is morphing to show Meiyre what she wants to see
  • When “Meiyre” looks into the mirror, she doesn’t have a reflection as she herself is a reflection
  • Meiyre isn’t dead but she might as well be. She’s trapped in the mirror in the dark
